Russians are being detained for taking photos of soldiers' graves and accused of treason
In Russia, there has been an increase in cases of high-profile detentions of people for photographing military graves in cemeteries, and criminal cases of treason are being brought against some of them, according to Dmitry Treshchanin, editor of the publication “Mediazona.”
According to him, Russian law enforcement agencies interpret the presence of such photos and messages on a person’s phone as evidence of carrying out tasks for Ukraine’s special services, although such requests may be sent by scammers or by the law enforcement agencies themselves to boost their clearance rates.
Fraudsters also use photos of graves to deceive the relatives of the deceased; as a result, people are being offered money for such photos in the publication’s name, although the editorial staff itself has no connection to this.
Late last week, news broke of a treason case against a Yaroslavl resident who had been photographing graves since October 2024, and over the past month, case files for at least two such cases have appeared in a local court, in addition to similar detentions in the Tomsk region.
