Tatarstan reported 13 deaths following a drone attack on Nizhnekamsk

Russian officials in Tatarstan, a region of the Russian Federation—an aggressor state—reported at least 13 dead and 75 wounded as a result of a drone attack on Nizhnekamsk. According to Russian authorities, a child is among the dead. A period of mourning has been declared in Tatarstan.

The drones attacked Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that the Tanevo oil refinery in the city was hit. FirePoint, a Ukrainian defense technology manufacturer, stated that its FP-1 drones were used during the attack.

According to local sources, the strike lasted several hours—through the night and into the morning. Verified images from social media show large plumes of smoke and flames, with air raid sirens audible in the background. The oil refineries in Nizhnekamsk had already been struck on June 12.

Russian authorities confirmed the attack on industrial facilities, while also stating that residential areas were also hit. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation claims that civilians not involved in military operations were among the casualties. The BBC notes that it has been unable to independently verify this information.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, stated that Ukraine is attacking facilities that, according to its assessment, are being used to launch strikes against Ukraine, manufacture weapons, and support Russian military efforts. According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin bears responsibility for the deaths of civilians in Russia, since without his aggression, these people would still be alive.

Moscow also claimed that overnight, Russian air defenses allegedly shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones.
