Russian Command Repeats Past Mistakes Near Lyman — ISW
Russian occupation forces are attempting to repeat the tactics they used four years ago and encircle Lyman in the Donetsk region, but they are once again “stuck.”
The U.S. Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that this time the invaders’ starting positions are significantly worse, and the combat capabilities of the Russian army have declined substantially.
The Russian military command is seeking to establish a foothold to the north, northeast, and east of the city.
Analysts compare the enemy’s current actions to the offensive campaign in the summer of 2022, when the Russians planned a large-scale encirclement of Lyman along a line stretching from the city itself to Izyum.
That attempt by the occupiers failed completely, as during the counteroffensive in September–October 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine drove the enemy out of both settlements within a few weeks.
As of June 2026, the current front line in the Sloviansk direction is far less advantageous for the Russian army.
Another attempt to encircle Lyman and open the way to Sloviansk has once again proved unsuccessful.
Experts emphasize that the Russian leadership has not learned the necessary lessons from past defeats and continues to set unrealistic objectives for its soldiers.
This is reported by ISW.

As a reminder, Poland scrambled its fighter jets in response to a large-scale Russian air attack on Ukraine.
The Russian attack damaged energy and oil and gas infrastructure, and there are casualties.
