Law enforcement officials have launched a pre-trial investigation into the alleged shooting by Russian military personnel of a Ukrainian soldier who was being held captive. The incident occurred on July 13 near the village of Yalta in Donetsk Oblast.

“On July 13, 2026, at 2:42 p.m., near the village of Yalta in the Komarska rural community, representatives of the Russian Armed Forces took a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine prisoner. After interrogation, one of the occupiers gave the order to execute the Ukrainian defender, and another shot him with a firearm,” according to a statement from the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Under the procedural guidance of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pretrial investigation has been launched into the commission of a war crime resulting in the death of a person (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Urgent investigative (search) measures are currently being carried out to establish all the circumstances of the incident and identify the Russian military personnel involved in committing this crime.

The General Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the killing of prisoners of war constitutes a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a serious international crime.

Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that a Russian judge was under suspicion for the imprisonment of prisoners of war.

As a reminder, the SBU and the National Police dismantled an international drug syndicate.

Additionally, the police and the SBU dismantled schemes to evade mobilization.
