The SBU detained an FSB agent who was planning an assassination attempt on a Russian opposition figure

The Security Service of Ukraine foiled a contract killing in Kyiv and detained an FSB agent. According to the investigation, the woman was planning an assassination attempt on a Russian opposition figure who heads one of Ukraine’s civil society organizations.

 

The SBU’s counterintelligence unit detained a woman in Kyiv who, according to investigators, had been tasked by the FSB with eliminating the Russian opposition figure. He currently heads one of Ukraine’s national civil society organizations and fought on Ukraine’s side after the outbreak of full-scale war.

According to investigators, the assassination was to take place near a gym in the capital, where the man works as a kickboxing coach. The agent was supposed to set up an ambush and open fire with a service pistol.

The SBU detained her while she was conducting a reconnaissance of the area near the sports complex. The woman was selecting the location from which she planned to carry out the attack.

According to the case file, the perpetrator was an unemployed resident of the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol. She was allegedly recruited to cooperate with Russian special services in exchange for a promise to drop a case involving the illegal possession of drugs.

After being recruited, the woman underwent training at a local “branch” of the FSB. There, she was taught covert operations, orienteering, and the use of firearms.

She entered Ukraine via Belarus. The agent first traveled to Zhytomyr and then proceeded to Kyiv. In the capital, she changed hotels several times and took additional precautions to maintain secrecy.

Later, her handler from Russia provided her with the coordinates of a hiding place in a forest park area. From there, the woman retrieved a pistol and ammunition.

During a search of her hotel room, the SBU discovered the weapon and a smartphone the suspect had used to communicate with an FSB representative. According to the security service, his identity has already been established.

Investigators informed the woman that she is suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—treason committed under martial law. She is being held in custody without the right to bail. The penalty under this article provides for life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The special operation was carried out by SBU officers in the Zhytomyr region under the coordination of the SBU’s Counterintelligence Department and the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor’s office.
