The SBU detained two Russian agents who were directing strikes on Mykolaiv
On August 7, counterintelligence and cyber experts from the SBU detained two agents of Russian intelligence services in the Mykolaiv region. According to the investigation, they were working separately to gather intelligence for missile and drone strikes on Mykolaiv.
According to the investigation, both suspects were recruited through Telegram channels, where they posted anti-Ukrainian comments in support of Russia.
According to the SBU, one of the detainees was a local handyman who collaborated with the Russian FSB. He gathered information about Mykolaiv’s logistical infrastructure and tracked the combat positions of Ukrainian air defense forces in the south of the country.
To gather intelligence, the man rode a bicycle around the city, recording the coordinates of potential targets using his smartphone.
The second agent was exposed among the staff of one of Mykolaiv’s markets. According to the investigation, she was carrying out tasks for Russian military intelligence (GRU), gathering information on backup command posts and checkpoints of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The woman roamed the city and its outskirts, covertly photographing military facilities with geotags, and also attempted to obtain the necessary information from acquaintances and market visitors during casual conversations.
SBU officers documented the activities of both agents and subsequently detained them at their residences. At the same time, law enforcement officials took measures to secure Ukrainian military facilities that may have been at risk.
During searches of the suspects’ residences, authorities seized mobile phones and computer equipment containing evidence of collaboration with Russian intelligence services.
Investigators informed the detainees that they are suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). If found guilty, they face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
