What is known about the “Geran-5”: jet UAVs not yet confirmed in Ukraine

The Ukrainian Air Force reports sightings of high-speed drones in Ukrainian airspace that, based on their characteristics, could be jet-powered. At the same time, there is currently no official confirmation of the use of Russian “Geran-5” UAVs during attacks.

This was stated in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by Colonel Yurii Ihnat, Head of Communications for the Ukrainian Air Force Command.

What is known about the “Geran-5”

Recently, social media and online channels have circulated various reports about the possible use of Russia’s new jet drone “Geran-5.” However, the Air Force emphasizes that military personnel focus primarily on the parameters of aerial targets, rather than their given names.

According to Ihnat, detailed studies of downed or neutralized drones are carried out by specialized institutions under the General Staff and the Kyiv Institute of Forensic Expertise.

How jet drones differ from conventional drones

The Air Force analyzes the flight characteristics of targets — speed, maneuverability, changes in motion parameters, and potential strike range. These indicators allow them to assess the threat level.

Ihnat notes that jet drones are much harder to intercept:

  • They have higher flight speeds.
  • Mobile gun crews are largely ineffective against them.
  • MANPADS (man-portable air-defense systems) may be used but with limited effectiveness.
  • Interceptor drones cannot catch up to such targets.

What can intercept them
To counter high-speed UAVs, other systems are currently used. According to Ihnat, interception of such targets may be carried out by:

  • Ground-based air defense systems
  • F-16 fighter jets
  • Mirage 2000 aircraft

Have “Geran-5” drones been recorded during attacks?
The Air Force emphasizes that it is currently impossible to officially confirm the use of the “Geran-5” UAV specifically.

“We record high-speed UAVs. They are likely jet drones. Further evaluation depends on the results of combat operations,” Ihnat said.

Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of missiles for air defense systems, leaving some complexes without ammunition.

Russia is recommissioning old aircraft due to the failure to produce new airliners.
