Overnight, Ukrainian defense forces struck 12 tankers belonging to Russia's shadow fleet

On the night of July 9, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a series of strikes against Russian military and logistical infrastructure. Twelve tankers belonging to the so-called “shadow fleet,” as well as an oil terminal and an ammunition depot, were targeted. The aim of the operation was to weaken the aggressor state’s military and economic capabilities.

Ukrainian units struck several Russian Navy vessels simultaneously in the waters of the Sea of Azov. These included:

  • 12 tankers;
  • one tugboat;
  • one dry cargo ship.

These vessels were transporting fuel and lubricants for Russian military units. They were also used to transport oil and petroleum products in circumvention of international sanctions—which is one of the main sources of funding for the war against Ukraine.

The extent of the damage sustained by the vessels is still being determined.

The “Yug Rusi” oil terminal in Bataysk, Rostov Oblast, was also attacked. A fire broke out near the facility.

This facility transships petroleum products for export. In addition, it supplies fuel to Russian troops on the southern front, and the foreign currency from oil sales is used to finance the war. The extent of the damage is also being assessed.

Another strike hit a Russian ammunition depot in the Sorokine area of Luhansk Oblast.

This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
