The U.S. sees an opportunity for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia despite the war in Iran — Bloomberg

The United States remains optimistic about the possibility of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, even as its foreign policy focus has been shifted to the Middle East.

Bloomberg reports this, citing its own sources familiar with the course of internal discussions in Washington.

According to the publication, the U.S. side informed its allies last week that its strategic goal remains unchanged.

The White House still believes it is possible to organize a new round of dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow to find ways to end the conflict.

“The U.S. told its allies last week that, as before, it believes it is possible to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table, although there is no movement at the moment,” the agency’s source emphasized.

This indicates the administration’s readiness to actively mediate under favorable conditions.

At the same time, Washington is taking a sober view of the current situation, acknowledging the significant gap between the parties’ positions.

Officials note that Ukraine’s and Russia’s demands remain diametrically opposed, which currently blocks any real progress.

The situation is complicated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, where the U.S. is forced to spend significant resources on containing Iran.

This raises concerns about the possible depletion of certain types of ammunition that are needed by both Ukraine and its partners in Israel.

In early 2026, Ukraine, with U.S. mediation, had already held several rounds of negotiations with the aggressor, but they did not result in the desired ceasefire.

The Kremlin’s demand to transfer the unoccupied parts of Donbas to Russian control remains the main obstacle.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected the possibility of any territorial concessions in exchange for peace.

He emphasized that Kyiv will not agree to surrender Donetsk or Luhansk regions, counting on the further expulsion of occupying forces from the border areas.

As a reminder, on April 1, Zelenskyy will hold a video conference with the U.S. and NATO.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will not be the party blocking peace talks and is ready to hold them in any country except Russia and Belarus.
