July 5, 2026: Day of the Liberation of Slavyansk from Russian Occupation

On July 5, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Sloviansk’s Liberation from Russian Occupation. It was on this day in 2014 that Ukrainian forces regained control of the city after nearly three months of occupation by pro-Russian militants. This event marked one of the first major successes of Ukrainian forces in the fight for the country’s independence and territorial integrity.

The History of Sloviansk’s Liberation

In April 2014, Sloviansk became one of the first Ukrainian cities to be seized by armed pro-Russian militants. The city held significant strategic importance, which is why some of the first large-scale battles in the Donbas unfolded around it.

After prolonged fighting and a successful operation by the Ukrainian Defense Forces, the militants withdrew from the city. On July 5, 2014, Ukrainian troops entered Sloviansk, and the Ukrainian national flag was once again raised over the administrative buildings.

Why This Date Is Important

The liberation of Sloviansk marked a turning point in the early stages of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. It demonstrated that the Ukrainian army is capable of successfully liberating occupied territories and restoring state control.

After the city returned to Ukrainian control, the situation in the region was stabilized, and operations to liberate other settlements in the Donetsk region continued.

Sloviansk During the Full-Scale War

With the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Sloviansk once again found itself among the cities regularly subjected to Russian shelling. Despite the danger, the city continues to function, and its residents demonstrate resilience and fortitude.

Sloviansk remains an important humanitarian, logistical, and defense hub in the Donetsk region.
