Mykola Derkach, a State Emergency Service rescuer, died in Kharkiv after sustaining severe injuries during a second Russian strike on the city on the night of June 15. Medical personnel fought to save his life, but were unable to save him.

Doctors fought to save his life for several days, but they were unable to save the 48-year-old major in the Civil Protection Service.

Mykola Derkach was the shift commander of the 6th State Fire and Rescue Unit. That night, he and his colleagues were dealing with the aftermath of an enemy attack and rescuing people when the occupiers launched a second strike.

“On that terrible night, he was doing his job—saving people. It was then that the Russian strike cut short the lives of those who are the first to come to the aid of others,” the State Emergency Service noted.

The agency emphasized that Mykola was a true officer, a courageous rescuer, and a man with a big heart. He is survived by his daughter and mother.

Following Mykola Derkach’s death, the death toll from the Russian Federation’s attack on Kharkiv on June 15 rose to six. Along with him, the victims of the Russian strike included rescuers Dmytro Boiko, Danylo Tishchenko, Serhiy Makovetskyi, Vadym Zinchenko, and Oleksii Dorozhkin, chief specialist of the Emergency Situations Department of the Kharkiv City Council.

“His courage, dedication, and loyalty to the service will forever remain in the memory of his comrades, colleagues, and everyone who knew him,” the State Emergency Service added.

Earlier, the State Emergency Service released the names of the rescuers who died as a result of the strike on Kharkiv.

As a reminder, Russia attacked the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, causing a fire.

Prior to that, Russian cruise missiles struck the Zaporizhzhia region, leaving several people injured.
