US envoys discuss steps to end war with Putin in Moscow
In Moscow, envoys of US President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, held talks with Vladimir Putin, president of the Russian Federation, the aggressor state, on further steps to end Russia's war against Ukraine. As Asharq Al-Awsat reports, the White House said the sides discussed substantive plans for next steps that could be announced in the coming weeks.
Talks at the Kremlin
Witkoff, whom the outlet calls Trump's business partner, and the US president's son-in-law Kushner met with Putin on September 5. According to an unnamed White House official, the goal of the talks was to advance Trump's peace agenda in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov called the meeting extremely candid. According to him, the American side presented several ideas regarding possible paths to a settlement, but no details were disclosed. Ushakov also said that the Russian side told US representatives it was confident of achieving its military goals of capturing the rest of eastern Ukraine.

Trip to Kyiv
After the talks in Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner traveled to Kyiv. Russian agency TASS reported that on the morning of September 6, they arrived in Poland's Rzeszów on their way to the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expected the US envoys in Kyiv that same day.
Before the talks, Putin said Russia would do everything in its power to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and mediators in Kyiv. He also thanked Trump for his attempts to end the war. The day before, Trump said his envoys had brought a proposal to halt the fighting, without disclosing details.
Moscow and Kyiv said they were ready to temporarily refrain from strikes on the capitals. At the same time, the Ukrainian side reported that Russian attacks on September 5 killed 10 people in different regions of Ukraine, including a child and members of the child's family in the Kharkiv region, as well as two people near Kyiv.
