Moscow Reports Record-Breaking Drone Attack
On the evening of July 6, Russian authorities reported the largest-scale attack by Ukrainian drones in the past two years.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, from evening until morning, air defense forces allegedly shot down 430 drones heading toward the Moscow region.
Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 452 drones were destroyed between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Russian state media called this raid the largest in two years.
According to Sobyanin, most of the UAVs were intercepted far from the capital, while 36 drones were allegedly destroyed as they approached Moscow.
At the same time, according to official information from the Russian side, no significant damage was reported in Moscow or the Moscow region. The main consequences were temporary restrictions on operations at Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo airports, which subsequently resumed operations.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, drones were also allegedly shot down in 15 regions of Russia, as well as over the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.
Meanwhile, a fire was reported at the Belgorod Main Gas Pipeline Administration, which is part of Gazprom Transgaz Moscow. In addition, a partial power outage occurred in Belgorod, and local authorities reported one fatality. A fire was also reported at a facility in the Kaluga region.
Ukrainian monitoring sources have cast doubt on the Russian authorities’ claims regarding the scale of the attack on Moscow. In particular, it was noted that reports of allegedly hundreds of drones heading toward the Russian capital lack sufficient evidence, while information about strikes on individual military and industrial facilities in Russian regions continues to be clarified.
Analysts also point out that this is not the first time Russian authorities have claimed unprecedented drone attacks on Moscow without providing evidence of large-scale damage. Similar reports were made in March and December, when a record number of downed drones was also reported, though no significant damage in the Russian capital was officially recorded.
Amid these claims, Russia also launched a drone attack on Ukraine on the night of July 8. According to reports from the Ukrainian side, the strikes caused fires at industrial facilities in the Poltava region, and the death toll following the previous massive shelling of Kyiv rose to 19 people.
On the night of July 7, Ukraine carried out a massive drone attack on Russian territory. The Belgorod and Moscow regions were targeted; Russian authorities reported that air defense systems were operating continuously and that several airports were temporarily restricted.
As a reminder, Ukrainian analysts claim to have identified a vulnerability in Russia’s combat aviation defense system.
