In May, the Defense Forces recaptured twice as much territory as they lost — Ministry of Defense
Throughout May 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine demonstrated a significant advantage on the front lines, liberating twice as much Ukrainian territory as the Russian invaders had seized during the same period. This was reported by Serhiy Boev, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defense for European Integration.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2026) in Gdańsk, Poland, the official emphasized that achieving this result and creating the current “window of opportunity” was made possible by systematic technical and financial assistance from international partners.
Boev noted that with stable investment in modern deterrents and the strengthening of long-range capabilities, Ukraine is capable of doubling its current defensive successes and accelerating the end of the war. Separately, the deputy minister highlighted the effectiveness of Ukrainian long-range strikes against military-industrial and energy facilities behind enemy lines, which are significantly disrupting Russian logistics and inflicting tangible damage on the Russian economy.
This was reported by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as of June 25, Russian troops have not ceased their assault operations on key sections of the front, despite significant losses in personnel and equipment. At the same time, analysts note only minor tactical successes by the enemy in the Oleksandrivka sector, while in most other areas, Ukrainian defenders are holding their positions and preventing further advances.
As a reminder, the General Staff reported the elimination of 1,270 Russian occupiers on June 25.
