The Center for Public Diplomacy explained that Russia justifies its aggression with myths about NATO preparing an attack

On June 23, the Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council stated that Russia continues to justify its aggressive actions against Ukraine with fabricated narratives about an alleged NATO attack in the works. According to experts, such statements are part of an information campaign.

Russia is attempting to justify its own aggressive actions with myths about “NATO preparing an attack,” the NSDC’s Center for Countering Disinformation reported.

Russia is attempting to justify its own aggressive intentions toward Europe with false accusations that NATO is allegedly preparing to attack Russia.

As noted by the Center, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that NATO and the European Union are allegedly “preparing for a military confrontation with Russia around 2030.” He compared the West’s actions to Operation Barbarossa—Nazi Germany’s strategy during its invasion of the Soviet Union.

“The use of this historical reference is intended for a domestic Russian audience. By artificially comparing the modern NATO defense alliance to the Third Reich, the Kremlin seeks to mobilize Russian society and mentally prepare the population for potential participation in hostilities against European states,” the NSDC’s Press Center explained.

As noted, “it is telling that these absurd accusations from the Russian Federation come amid warnings from Western intelligence agencies that Russia itself may launch an armed attack on Alliance member states by 2030.” “Reflecting reality, the Kremlin is trying to stay one step ahead and portray its aggressive actions against European states as ‘necessary defense,’” the Public Relations Center stated.

“The Kremlin is once again using the tactic of shifting blame to mask its own plans to destabilize European security and justify further escalation,” the NSDC’s Center for Strategic and Political Analysis emphasized.
