Two planes could have been targeted at Zhuliany amid the anticipated visit by Witkoff and Kushner
During the attack on Kyiv’s Zhuliany Airport on September 4, two old Yak-40 aircraft were struck. This was stated by People’s Deputy Oleksiy Goncharenko, who noted that these Soviet passenger planes had not been used for flights even before the start of the full-scale war.
According to Goncharenko, the strike may be symbolic in light of a possible visit to Ukraine by U.S. President’s Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
“Essentially, Putin is sending a signal to the Americans: I don’t want to negotiate, and I won’t. Otherwise, why this demonstrative strike? It’s unclear,” the MP wrote.
He also noted that the Russian dictator was likely aware of Witkoff and Kushner’s plans to travel to Kyiv following their visit to Moscow.
Earlier reports indicated that the American representatives might arrive in Kyiv on Sunday following talks in Moscow on Saturday. According to Goncharenko, during the coordination phase, the possibility of their arrival at Boryspil Airport by plane was considered, but the American side had certain reservations about this plan.
