Ukraine will grant Ghanaian diplomats access to their citizens who fought for Russia
Ukraine will ensure that diplomats from the Republic of Ghana have access to their compatriots who participated in combat alongside the Russian army and were captured by Ukrainian forces.
This was announced during the official visit of Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to Kyiv.
During bilateral talks, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiga, paid particular attention to the issue of returning captured mercenaries to their homeland. The parties openly discussed the legal mechanisms and procedures governing the transfer of detained individuals.
The Ukrainian side emphasised strict compliance with international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. The Ghanaian delegation was given detailed information on the conditions under which their citizens are being held, including the compliance of these conditions with global standards.
“We have informed our Ghanaian colleagues about the detention conditions and the relevant legal procedures, and we will ensure that Ghanaian diplomats have access to their citizens during this visit,” Andriy Sybiga stated.
It is worth noting that Ukraine and Ghana are preparing the first-ever large-scale defence cooperation agreement.
Additionally, Ukraine and Ghana plan to establish an agro-processing centre in West Africa.
This visit also marked the first time in history that Ghana’s Foreign Minister has visited Kyiv.
