Ukraine signs contracts for about 1,000 Patriot missiles

With the support of allies and using a European Union loan, Ukraine is signing contracts for the supply of about 1,000 missiles for U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems. Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara said this at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, the Jerusalem Post reports.

Deliveries in the coming years

According to Khmara, most of the missiles will be delivered only over the coming years. He also called on partners to provide Ukraine with more urgent assistance.

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group focuses on the country’s battlefield needs. Germany and the United Kingdom also announced new decisions on support for Ukraine at the meeting.

Support from Germany and Britain

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that he would transfer urgently needed PAC-2 interceptor missiles from Bundeswehr stockpiles to Ukraine. According to him, Germany will also increase supplies of air-to-air missiles and continue transferring drones and long-range ammunition.

The United Kingdom announced the allocation of £100 million, or $135 million, to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense package in winter. The assistance is to include Patriot missiles, large-caliber artillery ammunition and drones to counter Russian attacks.
