In Ukraine, 1,688 civilians have been injured by Russian landmines
Since February 24, 2022, 1,688 civilians have been affected by Russian landmines and explosive remnants of war. These figures refer to victims of mine hazards resulting from the full-scale war.
These statistics include 1,515 adults and 173 children. Farmers constituted the largest occupational group among the victims, with 296 people. Next are:
- the unemployed—238;
- retirees—166;
- students—165;
- critical infrastructure workers – 164;
- drivers—108.
Farmers work directly in the fields, and that is precisely where explosive ordnance is most often left behind—especially in de-occupied and frontline areas where active combat took place. According to the Mine Action Review, Ukraine remains one of the most heavily contaminated countries in the world with explosive ordnance: cluster munitions are used extensively by both sides of the conflict.
The government is trying to reduce this risk for farmers: this spring, the Humanitarian Demining Center announced its first-ever auctions for the clearance of private agricultural land, and the state budget has allocated 2 billion hryvnias for the demining of agricultural land.
Humanitarian demining encompasses not only the search for and destruction of explosive ordnance, but also the survey and marking of contaminated areas, public awareness campaigns, and the transfer of cleared areas to civilian control.
The Directorate compiles statistics on casualties based on data from regional military administrations, regional units of the State Emergency Service, and the National Police.
