Mercenaries from 51 countries have been taken prisoner by Ukraine
Foreign nationals from 51 countries were taken prisoner by Ukraine after fighting on the side of the Russian army. This was stated by Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada’s Human Rights Commissioner, who emphasized that this fact demonstrates the scale of foreign involvement in the war against Ukraine.
One of the main topics of the meeting was the participation of foreign citizens in the war on Russia’s side. According to the ombudsman, citizens of 51 countries have already been taken prisoner in Ukraine while fighting as part of the Russian army. “Foreign nationals from 51 countries have been taken prisoner in Ukraine while fighting as part of the Russian occupying forces. That is why it is important to speak honestly and openly with the world about the fact that participating in the war on Russia’s side has real legal consequences,” Lubinets emphasized.
The Ombudsman noted that Ukraine must discuss this with its international partners and explain the consequences of foreigners’ participation in the war against Ukraine.
Ukraine has confirmed more than 20,000 cases of child deportation
During the meeting, Lubinets also discussed other humanitarian issues related to Russian aggression. According to him, 20,610 cases of deportation and forced displacement of Ukrainian children have been confirmed to date. As part of the “Bring Kids Back UA” initiative, Ukraine has already managed to repatriate 2,425 children. Of these, 465 children were returned with the assistance of the Ombudsman’s Office.
At the same time, thousands of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war remain in Russian captivity. Lubinets emphasized that Ukraine must continue to document every crime committed by Russia. He stated that all those responsible must be identified and held accountable.
Thus, the participation of citizens of other countries in the war on Russia’s side remains one of the issues that Ukraine raises with its international partners. Kyiv emphasizes that foreigners who join the Russian army and take part in hostilities against Ukraine must also be held accountable for their actions. Over the past 24 hours, Russian troops attacked several regions of Ukraine simultaneously. At least six people were killed and another 56 were wounded as a result of the shelling. Among those killed in Sumy were two children and a woman.
