Widows of Russian occupiers killed in the war are suing over the denial of benefits

In Russia, the civilian wives of Russian occupiers killed in the war have begun filing lawsuits over the denial of social benefits and privileges.

This was reported by Kommersant.

The first lawsuit was filed with the Russian Supreme Court by Alexandra Tokareva, who is challenging the provisions of the law that limit the right to compensation for the partners of deceased servicemen.

Under current rules, only women who have a child with the deceased, lived with him for at least three years, and can prove this in court are eligible for benefits.

The plaintiff believes that the new provisions restrict the rights of such women and violate the principle of equality before the law.

According to the publication, other women are preparing similar lawsuits. The initiative group seeking changes to the legislation includes more than 450 partners of fallen soldiers.

The Russian State Duma does not want to expand the criteria. Nina Ostanina, chair of the Committee on Family Protection, stated that in such situations, there could be several “common-law wives,” and the law allegedly does not allow for determining which of them is entitled to benefits.
