A Russian strike destroyed BookChef's warehouse, which held 100,000 books
On the night of August 5, a Russian missile strike destroyed the backup warehouse of the Ukrainian publishing house BookChef. More than 100,000 copies of books were lost as a result of the strike.
The publishing house reported that the warehouse was used as a backup storage facility for books. Due to the fire and destruction, most of the publications were completely burned.
This is yet another loss for the Ukrainian publishing industry, which continues to suffer due to Russian shelling and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
“Last night, our backup warehouse, located at the facility of our logistics partner Denka Logistics—which had recently begun operations following the destruction of our main warehouse—was hit by rocket fire. During the previous attack, the main warehouse was damaged, but there was still a small backup facility where part of our books were stored,” the publishing house noted.
“The fire destroyed over 100,000 more books from BookChef. These were all our remaining stock and new releases that had only recently arrived from the printing presses and were supposed to be in your hands very soon,” the publishing house reported.
An assessment of the attack’s consequences is ongoing.
The publishing house emphasized that it is forced to revise the delivery dates for pre-orders and explained that the dates for receiving the books will depend on the launch of new warehouse facilities and the reprinting of certain titles.
The “Ukrainian Books for Ukrainian Children” campaign is underway in Ukraine, aimed at supporting the publishing industry, which is suffering significant losses as a result of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression.
Following the Russian Federation’s strike on the warehouse, the Ranok publishing house is urgently reprinting the destroyed textbooks.
