Video: Drones Attacked One of Russia's Largest Oil Refineries
Overnight in the Samara Region of the Russian Federation, reports emerged of a drone attack on the Kuibyshev Oil Refinery. A fire broke out on the refinery’s grounds following the strike, as evidenced by videos posted online.
The Kuibyshev Oil Refinery is located in Samara and is part of Rosneft’s Samara Group of Companies. The facility is one of the largest oil refineries in the Volga region. Its design capacity is approximately 7 million metric tons of crude oil per year. The refinery specializes in the production of automotive gasoline, diesel fuel, and other petroleum products.
According to Rosneft, the facility processes crude oil from Western Siberia and the Samara Region. The refinery operates units for catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, hydrotreating, isomerization, and hydrocracking. Some of these technologies enable the production of components for high-octane fuel. In total, the plant produces about 30 types of products.
Construction of the Kuibyshev Oil Refinery began in 1943, when the Soviet Union was at war with Nazi Germany. The plant processed its first crude oil as early as September 1945. Seventy years after it began operations, the plant reported having processed its 400-millionth metric ton of crude oil.
The plant has undergone large-scale modernization on multiple occasions. Among the new facilities are an isomerization unit, a catalytic cracking complex, a methyl-tert-butyl ether production unit, and other process complexes. The modernization was aimed, in particular, at increasing the output of light petroleum products and the production of Euro 5-standard fuel.
Another distinctive feature of the Kuibyshev Oil Refinery is its role within the larger Samara oil refining hub: attacks on neighboring facilities in this cluster could impact the overall oil refining capacity of the entire region.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strike and announced that one of Russia’s key oil industry facilities had been hit. The General Staff reported that a massive fire broke out on the refinery’s grounds following the attack.
