Video: A fire broke out at the largest oil refinery in Russia's Far East
On August 11, a fire broke out at an oil refinery in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in the Khabarovsk Krai of the Russian Federation. The facility is the largest oil refinery in the Far East and the easternmost oil refinery in Russia.
Residents reported the fire around 11:00 a.m. local time (4:00 a.m. Kyiv time). ASTRA analysts examined footage from the scene and confirmed that the fire is at RN-Komsomolsk Oil Refinery LLC, a subsidiary of Rosneft. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
According to the company’s website, the facility began operations back in 1942 and has a design capacity of about 8.5 million metric tons of crude oil per year—approximately 170,000 barrels per day. In terms of scale, it is a large facility, but not the largest among Russian refineries: for example, the Omsk refinery has a capacity exceeding 20 million metric tons per year. However, the Komsomolsk Refinery is Russia’s easternmost oil refinery and one of the key suppliers of fuel for the entire Far Eastern Federal District.
The plant produces more than 20 types of petroleum products—automotive gasoline, K5-class eco-friendly diesel fuel, low-sulfur marine fuel, granulated sulfur, and other products. Separately, the company produces Arctic diesel fuel capable of operating at temperatures below minus 55°C: in 2025, Rosneft announced a 20% increase in production capacity for this fuel.
The plant receives its feedstock, in particular, via a branch line from the “Eastern Siberia–Pacific Ocean” main oil pipeline. Previously, the plant also received oil from Sakhalin via the Okha–Komsomolsk-on-Amur pipeline. In recent years, the refinery has undergone a large-scale modernization: the hydrocracking-hydrotreating complex reached a design capacity of 3.65 million metric tons per year, and the refining depth, according to the company’s 2025 report, has increased to about 89%, with a target of 92%.

As a reminder, a Russian attack on the Poltava region damaged gas stations and a facility.
In Dnipro on Friday, August 7, a World Health Organization humanitarian warehouse was destroyed as a result of the attack. There were no people on the premises at the time of the strike, and no casualties were reported.
Over the past 24 hours, the occupiers lost 1,130 troops and over 400 pieces of military equipment.
In the Kherson region, one person was killed and two were wounded as a result of Russian shelling.
