An occupier who shot and killed a civilian in Bucha has been identified

Ukrainian law enforcement officials have identified a Russian soldier who shot and killed an unarmed civilian man in occupied Bucha in March 2022.

This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, on March 5, 2022, a 70-year-old resident of Bucha emerged from the basement, where he had been hiding from shelling, to feed his dog. A Russian soldier, lying in ambush, fired a targeted shot from a sniper rifle from a distance of about 97 meters.

The man died at the scene from his injuries.

Investigators from the National Police, with the assistance of the Main Intelligence Directorate, established that Senior Sergeant Mikhail Bril of the Russian Armed Forces, who served as a senior sniper in the 234th Airborne Assault Regiment of the 76th Airborne Assault Division of the Russian Airborne Forces, was involved in the killing.

According to the investigation, the occupier’s actions constitute a violation of the laws and customs of war, as well as norms of international humanitarian law, which prohibit deliberate attacks on the civilian population.

The Main Intelligence Directorate reported that after the Russian soldier’s identity was established, a notice of suspicion was prepared against him under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with the intentional killing of a civilian.

At the same time, according to Ukrainian intelligence, Bryl was killed during combat operations in 2022. Due to the suspect’s death, the criminal proceedings will be closed after the necessary procedural steps are completed.
