The Ukrainian Armed Forces have tested a multi-layered defense system for attack drones against enemy interceptors
The Ukrainian military conducted comprehensive tests of defense systems for reusable “bomber”-type strike drones against interceptor drones. The tests took place in early August on six Ukrainian unmanned platforms in various configurations.
According to Colonel Vladislav Voloshin, head of the Department of the Central Directorate for Innovation Activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the tests confirmed the feasibility of creating a multi-layered defense system for strike UAVs.
This involves a set of measures that includes reducing the drone’s detectability, threat detection, crew alerts, electronic countermeasures, and the physical destruction of enemy interceptors.
During the tests, onboard electronic intelligence and countermeasure systems were evaluated. These systems are designed to detect enemy UAVs, identify their control and data transmission channels, and counter interceptors.
According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the tested systems can detect and jam interceptor drones at distances of over 1 km in the frequency range from 1 to 6,000 MHz.
Special attention was paid to reducing the detectability of large unmanned aerial vehicles. Multispectral camouflage was applied to the platforms, after which their detectability was assessed across various spectral bands.
The military also tested active defense systems. These systems automatically detect an approaching drone and can physically neutralize it. During the tests, nets and other physical countermeasures were used, among other things.
Separately, Ukrainian specialists practiced intercepting an enemy FPV drone using another FPV drone equipped with a net launcher.
Currently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are working on retrofitting their existing fleet of strike UAVs and further developing a multi-layered defense system against interceptor drones.
