A 60-year-old man will represent Great Britain at an international skateboard slalom tournament

Darren Miles from the United Kingdom took up professional skateboarding after turning 60. He now regularly competes and is preparing to represent his country at an international slalom tournament. In October, Miles will compete at the World Skateboarding Games in Paraguay.

Miles’s story with skateboarding began long before professional competitions. His mother gave him his first board when he was still a child. Since then, skateboarding has remained a part of his life from time to time. Darren skated on and off, but for a long time it was just a hobby. Work, daily chores, and other activities prevented him from fully focusing on the sport.

The situation changed after the COVID-19 lockdown. Miles noticed that his physical condition had noticeably deteriorated. Even simple movements that had previously posed no problem became more difficult. That’s when he decided to get back into skateboarding more seriously. But just skating wasn’t enough for him. Darren set a more ambitious goal for himself—to pursue the sport professionally.

He chose slalom

Miles decided to try his hand at slalom. In this discipline, a skateboarder must complete the course as quickly as possible, maneuvering between special gates or obstacles. It’s not enough to just be good on the board. An athlete needs speed, balance, precise control of movements, and good technique. Every turn must be executed at the right moment, because even a small mistake can affect the result.

For Darren, this meant essentially learning to skateboard all over again. He had to work harder on his physical fitness, coordination, and technique. At the same time, his age presented an additional challenge. After turning 60, the body doesn’t recover from physical exertion as quickly as it did in his youth. Therefore, training required not only perseverance but also a more mindful approach to his own body.

From Training to International Competitions

Gradually, his efforts paid off. Darren began regularly participating in slalom competitions and was no longer just skating for fun, but competing at a serious level. His story caught the attention of the British and international sports communities. Miles demonstrated that returning to a favorite pastime as an adult can develop into a genuine athletic career.

Now another important milestone awaits him. This October, Darren Miles will compete at the World Skateboarding Games in Paraguay. There, he will represent Great Britain in slalom. For a man who, just a few years ago, simply noticed that he was losing his physical fitness, this is a remarkable achievement.

His story isn’t about suddenly becoming a professional athlete at age 60. Rather, it’s about the opportunity to take up something you’ve long enjoyed but previously lacked the time or courage to pursue. Miles continues to train and prepare for the international competition. And his example illustrates a simple truth: a new chapter in life can begin even when it seems too late. The Guardian reports on this.

In the UK, ahead of Wednesday’s partial solar eclipse, special protective glasses are in short supply in stores and online. Some shoppers who managed to find them online are being told delivery won’t be until the end of the week.
