Trump’s Border Policies Turn Discrimination Into Law, Editorial Says

The New York Times editorial board condemns the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, calling it a campaign of racial discrimination against Latinos. Federal agents have reportedly detained U.S. citizens and legal immigrants simply for having brown skin or speaking Spanish, often violating civil rights and due process.

According to the editorial, immigration raids under Trump involved masked officers breaking into homes, smashing car windows, and handcuffing innocent people — including war veterans and long-term residents. Reports by ProPublica and court rulings confirm widespread racial profiling and unlawful arrests.

The board argues that while the U.S. has a right to enforce its immigration laws, it must do so humanely and within the rule of law. “What separates democracy from authoritarianism,” the authors write, “is not just the goal but the process.” America, they insist, must protect its values while addressing immigration challenges.
