Another powerful earthquake has struck Japan — Reuters
On Monday, April 20, 2026, a major earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck off the northeast coast of Japan.
This was reported by Reuters.
The powerful tremors were recorded at 4:53 p.m. local time, prompting an immediate tsunami warning in several prefectures.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the epicenter of the seismic activity was located in the Pacific Ocean near the Sanriku coast at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
The shallow depth significantly amplified the intensity of surface tremors, which were felt even by residents of Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter.

The intensity of the tremors reached a "5+" on the Japanese national scale. This is a critical level at which people have difficulty staying on their feet, and unreinforced concrete structures and walls begin to collapse.
The highest danger level has been declared for Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido prefectures, where waves up to 3 meters high are forecast.
“Evacuate immediately from coastal and riverside areas to a safe place, such as high ground or an evacuation shelter,” meteorologists said in an emergency appeal.

The first waves have already reached the coastline. A tsunami 80 centimeters high was recorded at the port of Kuji in Iwate Prefecture, and 40 centimeters high at the port of Miyako.
Experts warn that water levels continue to rise rapidly, and subsequent waves could be significantly more powerful.
