Alexis Tsipras formed a new party ahead of the Greek elections
Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has announced the formation of a new political party, the “Greek Left Alliance” (ELAS). The politician stated that his party will fight corruption, champion social justice, and work toward the country’s economic development.
This was reported by the publication Ekathimerini.
The new political party was unveiled late Tuesday evening. Tsipras pledged to restore the rule of law and the independence of state institutions in Greece.
“Our declaration today marks the beginning of a new collective effort to create a broad progressive alliance,” Tsipras said during his speech.
According to him, the new party offers a “compass for a new Greece” and promotes “a new patriotism inextricably linked to social justice.”
The announcement of the creation of ELAS was one of the key political moves ahead of Greece’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for next year.
Alexis Tsipras remains one of the country’s most prominent political figures following his high-profile standoff with international creditors during Greece’s financial crisis.
It was during his premiership that the country conducted difficult negotiations on the third bailout package, and the situation at the time nearly led to Greece’s exit from the eurozone.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, Tsipras lost to incumbent Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after which he stepped back from active political life.
As a reminder, the center-right Democratic Rally party won the parliamentary elections to the House of Representatives of Cyprus.
