Aliyev stated that there are only two superpowers in the world and belittled Putin
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that today, only the United States and China have the status of superpowers. He did not include Russia on this list.
Aliyev made these remarks on October 2 during the 8th Congress of the New Azerbaijan Party. He spoke about the country’s foreign policy and Baku’s relations with leading powers.
According to the Azerbaijani leader, the latest agreements with the U.S. and China were historic for his country. Azerbaijan signed a declaration on a comprehensive strategic partnership with China and a Strategic Charter with the U.S.
“These are the world’s two superpowers; there is no third,” Aliyev stated.
At the same time, in this part of his speech, he did not directly mention either Russia or Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. However, it follows from his statement that he does not consider Russia to be a superpower.
Aliyev also commented on the competition between Washington and Beijing. In his view, agreements between the U.S. and China on common rules could be of great importance to the entire world.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated at a meeting with representatives of the security agencies of the Organization of Turkic States in Baku that joint activities between Azerbaijan and Turkey strengthen stability in the region and beyond.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pardoned French citizen Martin Ryan, who had been sentenced in the country to 10 years in prison on espionage charges. The decision was made the day after the EU removed Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov from its sanctions list, and diplomats link these events to agreements regarding the release of French citizens.
