ARIA will not allow fully AI-generated tracks in its charts

On August 25, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) announced that tracks created entirely with artificial intelligence will not be eligible for its charts. The decision was made amid growing difficulty for listeners in distinguishing music created by humans from music generated by machines.

The success of an AI remix

As The Hindu International reports, ARIA's announcement was preceded by the viral success of an AI remix of Madonna's 1989 song Like a Prayer. It was created by Australian music producer and DJ Josh Fawaz.

According to the Associated Press, the remix spent several weeks in the national top 20. It also ranked second on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Singles chart. A video featuring the track received more than 23 million views on YouTube.

Transparent labeling

Initially, the use of artificial intelligence to create the track was not clearly disclosed. This sparked outrage among listeners and musicians who advocate for transparent labeling of synthetic music.
