ASUU declares indefinite strike at three Lagos State universities in Nigeria
Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike at three universities owned by Lagos State. They are Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
Reasons for the strike
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the ASUU Joint Campus Committee covering the three institutions declared the strike after a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government expired. The union issued it on August 31 but said that no resolution had been reached.
ASUU said that its latest warning of September 10 also did not lead to negotiations with the state authorities, while the deadline set for September 13 passed without dialogue. The union demands that the three universities adopt and implement the applicable provisions of an agreement concluded with the federal government in December 2025.

Union demands
Among the issues ASUU wants resolved are the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and welfare provisions for current and former academic staff. The union said its national leadership had endorsed the decision to strike.
ASUU stressed that the strike would continue until the Lagos State Government engages with the union and signs, adopts and fully implements the relevant provisions of the 2025 agreement. The union noted that the action is not directed against the university administrations and acknowledged their efforts to implement the agreement.
The union called on students to remain calm, act peacefully and obey the law. ASUU also acknowledged that the strike could affect the academic calendar and cause concern among parents and guardians, and asked traditional and religious leaders, alumni associations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to support its demands.
