Gold mine collapse in Sudan kills at least 60 people — Euronews
At least 60 prospectors were killed in the collapse of the Al-Zaraa gold mine near the city of El-Nahud in Sudan’s West Kordofan region. Many more people are considered missing, while survivors do not know how many miners may still be trapped under the rubble.
The collapse began on Tuesday
As Euronews reports, the mine reportedly began collapsing on Tuesday after two shafts dug too close to each other started to sink. The outlet notes that heavy machinery is often unavailable at small mines.

Rescue operations continue
Surviving miner Khair al-Sayed Jabara told AFP that a rescue operation continued on the night after the collapse. According to him, other prospectors are clearing rocks and soil with the same primitive tools they use to mine gold. Heavy machinery is needed to search for the dead and possible survivors.
Sudan’s gold mining industry has gained greater importance since the start of the civil war in April 2023, becoming an important source of income for an economy affected by the conflict. The war continues between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
