Drone attacks have brought operations at the Sochi airport to a standstill
A massive drone attack on Russia’s Krasnodar Krai led to a prolonged closure of the airspace over the resort city of Sochi.
Due to the flight restrictions imposed, over 100 flights were delayed or canceled, causing a major logistical collapse at the region’s main airport.
As of the morning of April 6, 2026, over 115 delayed flights were recorded at the airport terminals, and passengers were forced to wait for hours for permission to depart.
The situation inside the airport building remains tense due to overcrowding, as many people are unable to find hotel accommodations.
Many passengers are forced to sleep directly on the floor in the waiting areas, as delays for some flights exceed 16 hours.
The suspension of air traffic was caused by a series of drone attacks on strategic targets in the Krasnodar region on the evening of April 5.
Russian authorities were forced to close the airspace over Sochi and Novorossiysk to prevent risks to civil aviation while air defense systems were in operation.
As a reminder, Sochi Airport experienced a collapse due to an attack by Ukrainian drones.
Sochi also lost a third of its tourists due to the drone attacks.
