Australia plans to let users turn off social media algorithms
The Australian government plans to introduce a bill that could require social platforms to give users the option to turn off recommendation algorithms in their feeds. MyJoyOnline reports.
Choice for users
Communications Minister Anika Wells said the forthcoming digital duty-of-care rules should introduce basic safety standards for the technology industry. According to her, Meta, Google, TikTok and other companies could face substantial fines if they do not provide an option to opt out of algorithmic content selection.
The government will also seek expert advice on the mechanism for the change: whether users will have to turn algorithms on themselves or, conversely, opt out of them. Wells noted that some Australians value algorithmic recommendations for entertainment and the opportunity to learn about local businesses, but the choice should remain with the user.

Criticism and requirements for platforms
Liberal Party leader Angus Taylor assessed the initiative skeptically. He said it could be an attempt to censor social media and called on the government to first address the shortcomings of the social media ban for people under 16. Wells rejected allegations of censorship, stressing that the goal is for platforms to identify risks on their own services and reduce them.
The bill is expected to be introduced in the coming days. It may also place an obligation on platforms to prevent the spread of harmful content, including illegal pornography and videos promoting eating disorders. Activist Chanel Contos had previously called for a model under which algorithmic feeds would be available only after a user's voluntary consent.
