Hong Kong, an Asian hub, has topped the global market for foreign assets for the first time — Reuters

For the first time in history, Hong Kong has become the world’s largest hub for cross-border capital, displacing Switzerland from the top spot

According to a report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), cited by Reuters, the Asian financial hub has demonstrated rapid growth in foreign investment volumes.

This development marks a significant global shift in private capital management toward the Asia-Pacific region.

Currently, Hong Kong’s financial institutions manage a colossal sum—$2.95 trillion in cross-border assets.

At the same time, Swiss banks, which had held the lead in this sector for decades, trailed slightly behind, reporting $2.94 trillion.

Overall, the global foreign capital market recorded strong upward momentum and grew by 8.4% in 2025, reaching $15.7 trillion.

Analysts cite the massive inflow of capital from mainland China and a veritable boom in initial public offerings (IPOs) on the local stock exchange in 2025 as the main drivers of the Asian hub’s success.

At the same time, the region’s future prospects harbor hidden risks due to significant political dependence on Beijing.

“Hong Kong is strengthening its role as China’s gateway to global markets, although for this very reason it is vulnerable to economic and regulatory changes in mainland China,” BCG experts emphasize.

According to long-term forecasts by financial analysts, Hong Kong and Singapore will continue to demonstrate the highest growth rates in cross-border bookings through 2030, adding approximately 9% annually.

Against this backdrop, the European leader will show somewhat more modest results at 6% per year. However, despite the slower pace of growth, the European city retains significant advantages.
