In the Netherlands, drones will help catch stray cats – NOS

Plans are underway to use drones to control the stray cat population on one of the Dutch islands, according to a May 27 report by NOS.

On Schiermonnikoog—one of the islands along the northern coast of the Netherlands, which is a national park—an operation has been announced to trap about 70 stray cats, which will be tracked using drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras.

Unlike many previous cases in other locations, animal welfare organizations agree with the need for the roundup, as it is difficult for the cats to find food and shelter in those conditions, and local protected bird species and rabbits are suffering greatly as a result.

In addition, the cats compete for prey with birds of prey that are native to the region.

The last time cats were culled on the island was in 2022. At that time, they were lured into trap cages baited with treats. The cats were then transported to shelters on the mainland.

A few years ago in the province of Friesland—the last place where this practice remained—petitioners collected signatures to end the culling of stray cats.
