The Hungarian Parliament has revoked its decision to withdraw from the ICC — Telex

The Hungarian National Assembly has approved a bill to revoke the country’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. The decision was adopted under an emergency procedure, effectively maintaining Hungary’s membership in the ICC.

Telex reported this on May 27.

The proposal was supported by 133 deputies from the Tisza Party, while 37 deputies from Fidesz–KDNP voted against it, and 5 deputies from Mi Hazank abstained. The decision will take effect the day after the law is published.

Last week, the government had already expressed its intention in a resolution to halt the withdrawal process initiated by the previous government of Viktor Orbán.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar submitted the bill to parliament on Tuesday on behalf of the government. He justified the proposal by stating that “to preserve international peace and security and protect human rights, it is absolutely necessary to hold those guilty of the most serious international crimes accountable in an international judicial forum.” In his view, this requires maintaining Hungary’s participation in the Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Last spring, the Orbán government announced that it would begin the process of Hungary’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court, but shortly thereafter, the Fidesz party’s majority in parliament voted against this decision. When Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the ICC, arrived in Budapest on an official visit last April, he was not arrested, even though Hungary, as a member of the ICC, would have been obligated to do so under international law.

The process of Hungary’s withdrawal from the court was supposed to be completed in June, but Péter Magyar had previously stated that the goal of the “Tisza” government is to maintain membership in the ICC.

As a reminder, Ukraine and Hungary have agreedon a new round of negotiations.

Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was struck. Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that it was preparing urgent countermeasures.

Transcarpathiahas suffered the most massive attack by Russia since the start of the war — Regional Military Administration.
