Asian buyers redirect liquefied gas shipments amid Qatar supply halt

Asian countries are purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) initially destined for Europe. LNG tankers en route to European terminals are diverting towards Asia. Recently, a Japanese energy company offered $4 more per million British thermal units (MMBtu) than a German buyer under the original contract, indicating rising demand in the region.

This shift is due to the sudden shutdown of plants in Qatar, which resulted in 20% of the world's LNG supply vanishing overnight. Europe, facing sanctions against Russia, now heavily relies on maritime LNG shipments for heating, electricity generation, and chemical industry supply.

In response, demand in Asia surged: China, Japan, South Korea, and India together consume up to 85% of Qatar's LNG annually. Spot prices in Asia spiked to $23.8 per MMBtu, a three-year high, while European prices rose by 50% over the same period. Weekly auctions for additional gas supplies have also begun in Europe.

Given the ongoing competition for limited resources, LNG prices are expected to remain elevated, with suppliers increasingly seeking alternative routes and sources to meet the needs of both regions.
