Balendra Shah became Nepal's prime minister following anti-corruption protests
Balendra Shah was sworn in as Nepal's prime minister following parliamentary elections held amid widespread anti-corruption protests in the country.
This was reported by Reuters.
Shah, 35, a former mayor of the capital Kathmandu, took the helm of the government after his party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), won 182 of the 275 seats in parliament in the March 5 election.
These were the first elections following the Generation Z anti-corruption protests, during which 76 people were killed last September.
After taking the oath of office, Shah, who previously worked as a rapper, formed a 14-member cabinet, fulfilling his campaign promise to create a small team to reduce government spending. He appointed Svarna Vagla, an economist with a degree from Harvard University, as finance minister.
Neighboring India and China have already congratulated Shah on his appointment.
Earlier this week, a series of mass protests took place in Nepal. Seventy-two people were killed during the protests.
As a reminder, Nepalese Prime Minister Sharma Oli resigned following large-scale protests and unrest in the country.
Nepal also lifted its ban on social media following the protests.
Following the overthrow of the government and the resignation of Nepal’s prime minister, local youth turned to ChatGPT to select a new leader. The artificial intelligence suggested four potential candidates for the position of head of the interim government.
