British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that he is prepared to disagree with U.S. President Donald Trump if the country’s national interests so require. He made these remarks in an interview with the BBC, according to “European Truth.”
Burnham noted that his first meeting with Trump went well, and he described the U.S. president as “very friendly.” At the same time, the prime minister did not give a direct answer to two questions about whether he would trust Trump, explaining that the situation should be assessed as it unfolds.
In the full version of the interview, scheduled to air on Monday, Burnham said: “I certainly cannot say that I will not hold a different opinion than he [Trump], or that I won’t have to express a different idea that is right for the United Kingdom.”

When asked whether he would criticize the U.S. president if he believed it was the right thing to do, Burnham replied, “Of course.” He emphasized that the prime minister must, above all, defend his country’s national interests. The British prime minister also expressed concern that the U.S. president might start a conflict with Iran, adding that he would voice whatever position he believes is right.
Earlier, Burnham had approved the use of British military bases by the United States for “defensive strikes” against Iran.
