Most Swedes do not support the country joining the eurozone
Sweden is seeing a significant decline in support for switching from the national krona to the euro, the common European currency.
According to a recent survey, more than half of the kingdom’s citizens oppose joining the eurozone, while those in favor of abandoning the krona are currently in the minority.
Data released by the relevant government agency show a noticeable increase in skepticism among the population compared to last year’s figures.
Only 28.7% of Swedes supported abandoning the krona in favor of the euro—more than 3 percentage points less than in last year’s poll. Meanwhile, in May 2025, 32% voted for this option.
Conversely, the number of opponents to the introduction of the single European currency has crossed the psychological threshold of 50%. According to the agency, 52.1% of Swedes opposed the country’s entry into the eurozone.
In 2025, this figure stood at 49.5%. Some of the citizens surveyed have not yet decided on their own financial and political stance on this issue. Another 19.2% of respondents say they do not know how they would vote on joining the eurozone.
The issue of integration into the European Union’s monetary system has a long history of debate in Swedish society.
More than two decades ago, the country already attempted to put this decision to a nationwide vote, but that initiative also ended in failure.
In 2003, Sweden held a non-binding referendum on adopting the euro. According to the results, 55.9% of citizens opposed joining the eurozone, while 42% supported the decision.
Despite the current conservative sentiment among voters, the current government is considering a return to analyzing the economic opportunities offered by the eurozone.
Political forces plan to carefully weigh all potential risks and benefits after the upcoming national elections.
