Bulgaria has authorized the purchase of Russian equipment for the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant
The Bulgarian government has approved an exemption from the sanctions against Russia. The decision allows for the purchase from Russia of equipment necessary to ensure the operation of the country’s only nuclear power plant—the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant.
Thus, Bulgaria will import iron and steel products from Russia in accordance with the current agreement regarding the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to ensure its operational safety.
According to the government, this decision is due to the fact that a significant portion of the systems and equipment at the nuclear power plant are of Russian origin.
The Kozloduy NPP is Bulgaria’s only nuclear power plant and the country’s largest electricity producer. It accounts for more than one-third of the country’s annual electricity production.
An exception will also apply to equipment at the unfinished Belene Nuclear Power Plant. With this decision, the government authorizes the national energy company EAD to announce a public tender and enter into a contract with the Bulgarian subsidiary of the Russian company Atomstroyexport in Belene for the preservation of equipment supplied for Units 1 and 2 of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant.
