Boris Nadezhdin announced that he was leaving Russia for France
Russian opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin said he had left Russia for France. He posted a video recorded in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background on his Telegram channel, according to France 24.
Nadezhdin, 63, is a former liberal lawmaker and one of the few politicians who publicly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s war—as an aggressor state—against Ukraine while remaining in the country. In the video, he said he is alive and free but is not in Russia. The politician also said he would reveal his future plans later.
Nadezhdin had planned to run for parliament in the September elections in Dolgoprudny, near Moscow. Last month, the authorities of Russia, the aggressor state, designated him a “foreign agent,” briefly detained him, and subsequently fined him 1,000 rubles, or about $13, for displaying “extremist symbols.”

During the hearing on his case, medical personnel were called for Nadezhdin due to high blood pressure. Faced with pressure that effectively prevented him from running for office, the politician announced the end of his campaign, stating that he had been silenced and forced out of politics. Last month, he told AFP that, in his opinion, the authorities were persecuting him because of concerns about his popularity.
In 2024, Nadezhdin attempted to run as a presidential candidate in Russia against Putin. He collected tens of thousands of signatures in support, but was barred from the ballot.
