Britain wants a single market with the EU after Brexit
In the UK, a proposal has been put forward to create a single market for trade in goods with the European Union, which could mark a new phase in the reset of relations following Brexit. The initiative has not yet gained traction due to skepticism from the EU, but London is insisting on a more ambitious format for cooperation. This was reported by the BBC.
British officials have put forward the idea of creating a single market for trade in goods between the UK and the European Union, which could effectively be an attempt to partially restore the economic model that existed before Brexit, but in a new format of cooperation and taking into account the political realities following the country’s exit from the EU.
The BBC reports this, citing industry representatives who were briefed on the initiative and noted that it has not yet moved forward, as Brussels is approaching it cautiously and is focused primarily on more practical negotiations regarding trade in food products, the agricultural sector, and energy.
According to London’s plan, the next EU–UK summit is intended to be significantly more ambitious in terms of economic convergence, and one possible option being considered is a format of maximum free trade in all goods between the parties, without the additional barriers and restrictions that have arisen following Brexit.
At the same time, European officials have not yet shown a willingness to make quick decisions, as any expansion of economic integration requires the coordination of a large number of technical and political details, making the process complex and lengthy.
Representatives from the British side, however, insist that a new model of cooperation could be beneficial for both parties, as it would reduce trade barriers, simplify logistics, and restore some of the economic ties lost after the country’s exit from the EU.
Prior to this, a former British minister stated his readiness to replace Starmer.
Earlier, Starmer had noted growing tensions in relations with the US.
