Britain is not ruling out the use of Russian assets for Ukraine — ambassador
Neil Crompton, the British Ambassador to Ukraine, stated that the issue of using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine remains relevant.
He made this remark during an appearance on Hromadske Radio.
According to him, the possibility of using the proceeds from these assets to assist Ukraine was actively discussed at the end of last year.
Crompton noted that the UK, Canada, and the US support this idea, but the process has stalled somewhat at the European Union level.
At the same time, the EU has proposed an alternative option—providing Ukraine with an emergency loan.
The ambassador emphasized that London continues to advocate for the use of Russian funds and does not rule out returning to active consideration of this issue in the near future.
He also added that work is ongoing on financial mechanisms involving the IMF and the EU to support Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on Russia’s plans to use its $5 billion in frozen assets in the U.S. He stressed that since Russia started the war, these funds should be directed toward Ukraine’s recovery, not Moscow’s needs.
In the fourth year of the war, Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to try to regain control over his frozen assets. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Putin has achieved some success and is currently looking for ways to use these funds.
