British MP sues xAI over explicit images

A British MP has filed a lawsuit against xAI over explicit images created using the Grok AI. She claims that deepfakes featuring her were distributed without her consent and violated her right to privacy.

The case could become one of the first major legal tests in the UK regarding companies’ liability for content that users generate using AI.

British politician and Labour Party MP Jess Asato has filed a lawsuit against xAI over the use of her image in explicit images created by the AI Grok.

According to the Financial Times, users began generating and sharing such material as early as January, after which the situation spread beyond a single platform to the X network, which is owned by xAI. The lawsuit states that the created materials included both images of the MP in a swimsuit and sexually explicit videos, which caused a significant public outcry.

The plaintiff’s key argument is that the company is liable for tools that enable the creation and distribution of such content, even if it is generated directly by users. “The company violated laws regarding the protection of personal data and the unauthorized use of private information,” states the lawmaker’s position, which demands compensation and a court order to change its moderation approach.

She also emphasizes that tech companies should have implemented effective safeguards in advance to prevent harm to people, particularly women and children. xAI stated that as early as January, it had introduced restrictions on the creation of explicit content in Grok; however, as noted, these systems proved insufficiently effective and could be circumvented by users.

The situation has already drawn the attention of regulators in various countries—investigations are ongoing in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and California. Additionally, according to media reports, similar lawsuits have already been filed by other parties, including city officials, user groups, and individual public figures.

Lawyers and experts view this lawsuit as a potential precedent that could determine the extent to which large technology companies are liable for content created by their AI tools. It is also emphasized that the case could influence future regulations in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly regarding the protection of personal data and the fight against deepfakes.

Meanwhile, companies linked to Elon Musk are preparing for a potential IPO, and experts are already discussing whether the lawsuits will affect their valuation and investment appeal. For now, the case is just gaining momentum, and the court’s final decisions could be significant not only for xAI but for the entire artificial intelligence industry. This is reported by the Financial Times.

Recall how Grok turned X into a deepfake factory.

Also, training Grok 4 cost Musk’s xAI nearly $490 million.
