The EU has backed extending temporary protection for Ukrainians beyond 2027
On June 4, during a meeting of the EU Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg, the majority of participants expressed support for extending the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian citizens beyond March 2027. Participants in the discussion concluded that Ukrainians will continue to need legal guarantees for their stay in EU countries, so the issue of extending temporary protection remains relevant.
Following the June 4 EU Council meeting, EU interior ministers concluded that extending temporary protection for Ukrainians is appropriate.
"Exactly one year ago, we extended temporary protection until March 2027. Of course, we discussed this today. And the consensus was… that we should extend temporary protection," Brunner stated.
He clarified that the European Commission now plans to discuss this issue with the Ukrainian side: “It is important for us to hear the opinion of Ukrainians, to find out what they want as well.”
It is equally important, he said, to take into account the views of the EU member states that have taken in the largest number of Ukrainian citizens.
"Extending temporary protection is key, but there are different approaches. One of them is to exclude men aged 23 to 60, those of conscription age. And this is also what Ukrainians want us to do," the European Commissioner said.
Magnus Brunner announced that over the coming weeks, the European Commission will present a legislative proposal to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians.
