The Czech Republic has selected its first astronaut. The chosen candidate is Aleš Svoboda, who, according to preliminary plans, will travel to the International Space Station as early as next year. The mission is expected to be a historic event for the country and an important step in the development of the Czech Republic’s participation in space programs.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, in announcing this, referred to the Agreement on the Implementation of the Czech Orbital Mission to the ISS, signed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the company Vast.
“Participation in this mission demonstrates that the Czech Republic can be part of the most advanced projects of our time,” said the head of government.
The mission, consisting of four astronauts, to the International Space Station (ISS) is scheduled for the second half of 2027.
The inclusion of a Czech astronaut in the expedition, which is to depart on a Dragon spacecraft, still needs to be approved by the Multinational Crew Coordination Group.
As a reminder, Dragon is a project of the American company SpaceX.
As reported, Aleš Svoboda was selected for the European Space Agency (ESA) reserve crew in 2022. As part of a strategic agreement between the ESA and the private space company Vast, he is preparing to fly to the International Space Station as a pilot of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.
According to a Ukrinform correspondent, this was announced at a press conference on Monday at the Planetarium in Prague.
